Topic: Rebuilding cities for a "post-carbon" world: the Vancouver experience

Presenter: Prof. Ian McKendry (University of British Columbia)

Time: 1600-1700pm

Date: Thursday 9th June 2011

Location: Jobberns Room, 406, Geography

Abstract: Christchurch faces the challenge of rebuilding at a time when there is wider
imperative to reduce carbon emissions. Research in Vancouver (another earthquake
prone city) will be used to describe how cities can achieve lower carbon
emissions. Several Vancouver urban planning initiatives designed to address
typical urban "ailments" (i.e. traffic, sprawl, a declining CBD) will also be
described. The principles outlined may be useful to consider when rebuilding
Christchurch.
