Poaching in Nunavik: an analysis of its dynamics and meanings in Arctic Quebec
The notion of "poaching" is a contested in Nunavik (the Inuit region of northern Quebec ). This research focuses on the experience of the multiple stakeholders who are negotiating what it means when new regulatory concepts and structures of wildlife management that have been set up as a result of land claims are applied in the region. The research explores how these concepts are re-defining people's conception of, access to, and use of resources, and in so doing, shaping their notions of environment, community, and the rights and obligations that accrue to community members. This study also serves as a vehicle for looking at how the imposition/adoption of essentially colonial forces are affecting the formation of identity and ethnic relations between Inuit and non-Inuit.
