Landscapes and MemorialisationDust

Recent work by Jo-anne Morgan and Eric Pawson on monuments and memory examines the significance, historically and today, of war memorials and other civic monuments, and the cultural practices that produced them. It has identified the substantial increase in memorialising that occurred during the 1990s, creating what have been called new 'theatres of memory' as society becomes more focused on the roots of family and group identities. This work has been extended to examine the commemorative role of trees and treescape memories in a project with Paul Cloke, a recent Erskine Fellow in the department.
