Biological economies
This is a national research project involving researchers in human geography and rural sociology from six New Zealand campuses. Its purposes are twofold:
- to raise the visibility of social science as a means of understanding change in New Zealand’s biologically-based economic sectors (food and fibre production and associated industries)
- to develop this understanding theoretically in order to contribute to international debates about value chains, eco-verification, carbon miles, sustainability and climate change
The project is backed by the Building Research Capability in Social Sciences network (BRCSS). The project leader is Professor Richard Le Heron (University of Auckland). Team members are drawn from Geography at Auckland, Waikato, Massey, Canterbury, social science at Lincoln and CSAFE (Centre for the Study of Agriculture, Food and the Environment) at Otago.
The team meets regularly by means of KAREN, the inter-university high speed broadband grid, and in f2f meetings at conferences.
