Matua Ruapehu: Wairua Maori, Western Science and Mt Ruapehu
This presentation comes at the end of over two years research into the 2007 Mt Ruapehu Lahar, and the implications of the DOC lahar management decision for Matauranga Maori. My 420 project sought to grapple more with issues of engagement, research ethics and how I understood science. Since then my research has been more focused on current natural hazard and resource management paradigms, and how they engage with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. I have also become interested in how hazards are framed and perceived by different cultures, and will briefly explore my findings in this presentation.
