Research Analyst in the Monitoring and research team at the Christchurch City Council

The monitoring and research team monitors, analysis, reports and provides advice on Christchurch City¹s social, economic natural and built environment. We also undertake research and provide information for planners, policy analysts, other council units, government departments and organisations, students and the general public.
This has lead to involvement in a wide range of interesting work such as the Urban Development Strategy, Gambling Bylaw, Akaroa Harbour Basin Settlements Study and the Central City Revitalisation Project.

Computer and analytical skills learned in the geography department are used daily in my role to tailor large amounts of data for a specific purpose, come up with innovative solutions to problems and to develop and maintain information systems. Spatial information and analysis is often more useful for the projects we are involved. The GIS papers at university have provided a sound theoretical and practical base for this.

I really think the Honours year is well worth while as I learnt so much over this year and felt a lot more employable by the end of it. I am sure a Masters would further add to this and I look forward to doing mine at some stage in the future.
