Masters project for GIS savy student: (9 Feb 2012)
We are seeking a student with GIS skills to join a team of researchers examining the effects of the earthquakes on the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai saltmarsh ecosystems.
Saltmarsh ecosystems function to filter sediment-laden waters entering an estuary and are as biologically productive as rain forests. Locally, our saltmarsh provide habitat, nesting space and food sources that birds fly from as far away as Alaska and Japan to feed on.
Evidence from a recent NIWA study shows that parts of the estuary have been uplifted while other areas have subsided, with changes of up to a meter in bed elevation. Your Masters project would involve detailed elevation and plant surveys of 4-5 salt marsh sites around the estuary using a total station and GPS.
Network adjustment techniques may be needed to establish sea level benchmark controls. Assistance will be provided to get you up to speed with plant identification and there will be opportunities to do fieldwork alongside other students and/or staff, plus funding to cover field expenses.
You will be analysing your field data in relation to data collected pre-quake to detect changes in the bed levels and the responses (current and future likely) of the saltmarsh species to the earthquake deformation. For more information please contact Deirdre Hart (Geography, deirdre.hart@canterbury.ac.nz) or Islay Marsden (Biology, islay.marsden@canterbury.ac.nz).
GIS Graduates - ESRI
One of our Masters graduates from the late 90's, now working for ESRI in Redlands, USA in their ArcGIS Mobile team is looking for a 'talented Geographer with an interest in computer science' to join his team, which is 'ramping up' and offers a range of possibilities - a good work ethic is the main requirement as on the job training will be provided to suit.
He's sending a couple of specific job descriptions, but there are many other opportunities at ESRI, who are looking to appoint ~600 people this year, in groups ranging from developers to product managers, in web based GIS, cartography... you name it, which means this could become an ongoing 'exchange programme'. They can organise an 'H' visa - good for 3 years, extendable, and transferable to other employers.
If you are interested in a move to the USA contact Myles Sutherland.
