Goal

To improve the quality and status of learning and teaching of geography in higher education internationally

Purposes

  1. To promote innovative, creative, and collaborative research as well as critical reflection on learning and teaching of geography
  2. To facilitate the exchange of materials, ideas, and experiences about learning and teaching of geography and to stimulate international dialogue
  3. To create an inclusive international community aimed at raising the profile and status of learning and teaching of geography.

The INLT was established at the International Symposium for Learning and Teaching Geography in Higher Education held in Honolulu in March 1999. Since then meetings have been held regularly at AAG annual conferences and at IGU congresses, with workshops at the IGU Congress in Glasgow (2004), the regional IGU congress in Brisbane (2006), and at the AAG in Washington DC (2010). The outcomes from these workshops were published in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education in January 2006 and January 2008.

The INLT will be holding sessions within the AAG meeting in February 2012, and holding a workshop in Bangalore, India in mid March 2012. Details will follow shortly.

The INLT is co-chaired by Helen Walkington (Oxford Brookes, UK); Eric Pawson (Canterbury, NZ) and Michael Solem (AAG, US). A twice-yearly newsletter is edited by Ruth Healey. Items for inclusion should be emailed to Ruth Healey at r.healey@chester.ac.uk
