CUGS: Canterbury University Geographical Society

Social LearningUpcoming Event

CUGS is a new geographical society in Christchurch and one of the most sociable, too. It is run by geography students. The students invite a range of guest lecturers, who are often prominent figures in their discipline, to come to speak to CUGS members. CUGS provides a forum for highly respected New Zealand and international guest speakers on course-related and general matters, providing an excellent opportunity to broaden your knowledge.

Just because our title implies we are an academic society, this doesn’t mean we have no fun, so keep on reading!

Membership is just $5 per annum so if you haven’t joined then think about doing so by contacting Ross Barnett in Room 410. If you are a Geographer, then CUGS is for you. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Our Aims

  • To be more sociable by encouraging more staff-student interaction at all levels
  • To expose undergraduates, especially 100 and 200 level students, to prominent figures in their discipline
  • To encourage a sense of ‘ownership’ of their discipline, by getting students involved in running the Society
  • Perhaps to produce a CUGS journal full of interesting and informative articles which would provide an excellent supplement to their broader fields of study.

Upcoming Event:

1.  Graham Bentham seminar "How the environment causes obesity" to be held in the Geography Learning Space Thurs 18 March 4-5pm with beer, wine and snacks provided.

2. Term 2: Rugby match

3. Term 3: Tour of Matsons brewery and talk on globalisation and the NZ brewing industry.

4. Term 4: End of semester dinner

- We need student volunteers to be part of an organising committee to help with functions and to suggest others.
